A Fuso track, registration number UAB 441A carrying over 800 crates of club beer from Lira deport into Gulu town last week failed to negotiate a corner on Bank Lane Street and tipped to its side at the ATM shade of Centenary bank.
According to eyewitnesses who were majorly boda boda riders stationed at the junction, the track approached the corner at a high speed and failed to negotiate before losing control.
Mr Obonyo Allison, a security guard at Centenary Bank who sat at the ATM shade when the accident occurred said that he just heard a loud bang and then broken glasses started flying everywhere. He blamed the accident on reckless driving as the truck approached the corner at high speed. He said that it was a miracle that no one was injured or killed.
About 450 crates of beer roughly amounting to 13 million were reportedly damaged, and because the accident happened at night; some of the loss was attributed to looters who soon stormed the truck and ransacked through the damage making off with some creates.
The police who arrived on the scene 30 minutes after the accident managed to contain the situation, but wondered why the security guards at the bank could not intervene when the looters swamped on the truck.
The guards said that it was not in their jurisdiction and besides, they were still recovering from the shock of escaping the accident.
The Police officer in charge of the crime unit in Gulu Mr Kagwa Okoya, said that the accident might have also occurred due to Mechanical fault in the vehicle as it tried to negotiate the corner, he said that an investigation had been launched. By A Web design Company
