Layibi Women Arrested for Selling NUSAF Goats to Clear Loan

A woman beneficiary of NUSAF Phase 2 program is in trouble after selling some of the goats that she received to clear money borrowed from Brac, a microfinance lending company.

Ms Christine Ajok who is a member of Wii Aworanga Goat rearing community sub project in Layibi division in Gulu municipality is being detained by the police for allegedly selling three of the five goats the group received under the Project.

Ajok was arrested last Monday by police officers from Gulu CPS and by the time of filling this report, she was still being held at Gulu CPS with two other members of the group on the same allegation.  The other two are Cecilia Acayo and Justine Omony.

Ajok admitted to selling one goat but said that the other two died under mysterious circumstance.

Acayo is alleged to have sold all of her five “donations” meanwhile Omony is said to have sold two but claimed that the other three died.

According to Gulu District NUSAF Technical Officer Dr. Tony Aliro, the trio has abused government objective set for running the program.

Dr. Aliro explained that the goats were meant for breeding so that it can multiply and help the community’s sub project beneficiaries.

Dr. Aliro said that if the goats had died, the accused will be required to produce veterinary postmortem reports. 

He added that if the goats were stolen, each individual will be required to produce a police report to back up their claim.

Under the NUSAF II project, the group received 9.9 million shillings for the procurement of 75 goats with each member receiving five goats. 

There are twelve goat rearing sub projects in Gulu with four in the municipality and the other eight spread out in the district.

The Northern Uganda Social Action Fund Project a 200 billion shillings government program co funded by World Bank is aimed at empowering communities in Northern Uganda who are emerging from the shadows of the two decades of brutal war between the government of President Yoweri Museveni and Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) led by Joseph Kony, in order to enhance their livelihoods through income generating activities.
