Albinos in northern Uganda will on Wednesday next week get free medical checkup and skin care at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital in Gulu town.
The free skin clinic and general medical checkup is organized in a collaboration between the Lions Club of Gulu metropolitan, the Lions Club of New Zealand, the NGO Asante Mariamu and the Gulu Regional Hospital.
Geoff Walker a photographer and member of Lions Club New Zealand observed that Albinism was not a major issue in Northern Uganda until the media in the region broke the story of Kica Emmanuel, an Albino boy who would walk 9kms from his home to Bidati Primary school in Nwoya district.
Acholi Times broke Kica’s story in 2014 as a result he received support from different organisations including Lions club New Zealand and People Help People Germany, among others.
Kica sat for his Primary Leaving Examination this year and is awaiting release of results by Uganda National Examination Board.
Geoff Walker is currently in Gulu together with Dee-Pak Bravindran, a youth volunteer. The duo said the story of Emmanuel Kica led to the creation of “Lions Empowering of Albino programmes “in northern Uganda. Under the programme, Albinos are to get free skin care treatment.
On Wednesday next week, December 14, the Albinos will be expected to turn up at for medical checkup and skin treatment at the Gulu regional referral Hospital Eye department.
Onyee John Paul, the first Vice President of Lions club urged Albinos to make use of the opportunity for the free medical checkup and skin treatment.
