Two inmates from Gulu central prison were on Wednesday evening rearrested after a botched attempted escape.
The incident happened around 6:30 pm as the inmates were being led back to prison from Gulu high court.
Mrs Margret Orik Obonyo, the officer in-charge of Gulu central prison said prison guards fired shots in the air and arrested the suspects.
‘‘The suspects tried to run as they were being escorted back from Gulu high court but they were immediately apprehended and rearrested,’’ Mrs Obonyo said.
The two inmates—both murder suspects were accused of killing one Patrick Opiyo a 20 year old resident of Kasubi Central village in Gulu Municipality last week.
The suspects were identified as Welborn Onen and Ibrahim Musa who were arrested by police through help of the Bardege division leaders on Thursday last week at Kaunda Grounds in Gulu town where the body of the late Opiyo was found.
Witnesses of the Wednesday incident told Acholi Times that one of the suspects tried to sneak away from other inmates near the The Ladder Bar and Grill opposite Kaunda grounds, only a short distance away from the prisons.
The suspect, this time with the co- accused again tried to run away the other inmates as approached St Monica Tailoring School, located a stone throw away from the prison.
Warders fired four bullet shots in the air, according to witnesses, as they gave chase to the suspects. Boda-Boda motorcycle taxis joined the chase. The two suspects were eventually caught and taken back into custody.
