A former staff of the Uganda Revenue Authority(URA) in Kitgum district has been shot dead in Kitgum district, police has said.
Tony Olanya who, according to police had recently retired from URA, was attacked in his home in Ayul A village in Pager division in Kitgum municipality at around 8:30 pm on yesterday evening.
” The attackers asked him for money and he told them he had no money and they shot him,” Aswa region police spokesman Patrick Jimmy Okema told Acholi Times this morning.
Mr Olanya was 56.
Acholi Times understands Mr Olanya on retiring from URA was working as a money lender in Kitgum. Police suspects this could have been the reason the attackers asked for money from him.
A team of investigators has left Gulu for Kitgum to investigate the murder.
” We hope to make arrests soon,” said Okema.
Kitgum has recently faced an increase in violent gun murders. The shootiing to death of the Olanya is the second in less than two weeks.
Kitgum district neighbours South Sudan that is littered with illegal small firearms. The porous border between Uganda and South Sudan makes it easier for wrong elements to traffic guns into Uganda.
Dear reader, Acholi Times will keep updating this developing story. Editor
