Gulu Chief Magistrate’s court on Friday remanded a renowned scrap dealer in Gulu for the alleged theft of a tractor plough.
Haruna Abas who has for many years run a garage in Gulu was remanded by the Gulu Chief Magistrate Ndiwalana Yunus for the alleged theft of a tractor plough in 2011 from Agung village, Todora parish in Nwoya district.
The tractor plough belonged to the family of Uma Kerubino, the Gulu Chairman of the Democratic Party. His son, Samuel Oola who has been pursuing the matter since 2011 told Acholi Times that he was thrilled by the remand of Haruna Abas who had for a long time eluded ‘‘ justice system.’’
‘‘I had him remanded by securing a court order which enabled me to arrest him,’’ Oola said in Gulu shortly after Mr Abas had been remanded.
Mr Abas will appear again before court August 12, 2016.
The scrap dealer runs a sprawling scrap house in his premises in Cereleno in Gulu market. He has been in the scrap business for decades including during the time when a vicious war raged in northern Uganda.
Mechanics in Gulu know him as a ‘‘last place of resort’ if you fail to fail to get a piece of second spare part for a car,’’ said a mechanic who spoke on condition of anonymity because he said ‘‘Haruna is a feared man.’’
‘‘I am on record for being the first person to have him incarcerated,’’ Oola said in a post on the social media platform, Facebook.
