Gulu Chairman Martin Ojara Mapenduzi on Friday called on Bank of Uganda to save the people of Gulu from financial fraudsters who are swindling millions of shillings from unsuspecting savers in the district.
Mapenduzi said most of the fraudsters come to Gulu under the guise of offering financial services.
The Gulu Chairman was today speaking at Acholi Inn Hotel in Gulu town at a function to commemorate 50 years of Bank of Uganda’s existence.
“On a daily basis many people come to my office crying explaining how their money has been swindled by money lenders,” Mapenduzi said.
He asked the Deputy Governor Bank of Uganda, Louis Kasekende to look into the matter.
“I will be glad if you address this matter now that you are here in Gulu. Our people in Acholi region are from war and they are poor. They need a special attention.”
Mapenduzi named Gulu Boda-Boda Motorcycle Association as one of the groups whose money has been swindled by financial fraudsters. He said the police and the district leadership in Gulu is fighting to recover 800 million shillings stolen from unsuspecting savers in the district.
Louis Kasekende, the deputy Governor Bank of Uganda while responding said: “The Gulu Chairman has hit a very important point. We have had such challenges in other districts too. We shall see how to address it.”
Bank of Uganda (BoU) started operation in August 1966 and it opened doors to 6 foreign commercial banks and one indigenous commercial bank which was the Uganda Commercial Bank. It replaced the East African Currency Board which had been created by the British colonial government.
BoU was also formed to issue the East African shilling across Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Somalia. The Bank which has authority over other banks and financial Institutions.

Is it Aswa or ACWAR please S is different from C. If other regions cannot spell things correctly in the language then Acoli writers should present the correct spellings. E.g. Acoli is not spelt ACHOLI.
