Nwoya district has suspended issuing licenses for exploitation of forest products in an effort to curb environmental degradation.
The suspension comes shortly after the council approved an environment plan for the district.
Nwoya district chairman Patrick Okello Oryema said last week that no permits will be issued for commercial charcoal burning and tree cutting.
Oryema explained that the district ‘‘climate change alliance’’ working group recently formed will be used to mitigate environmental degradation.
“Nobody should go to the district forest office asking for permit for charcoal business and timber cutting until we have got the formal procedure that can help save the environment,’’ said Oryema,
In September 2015, over 1,000 bags of charcoal was impounded by the police environmental protection unit in Nwoya during a two day crackdown on charcoal burning in Lii Sub County in Nwoya district.
Nwoya district forest officer Emmanuel Omara said tree cutting in Nwoya is high in all the nine sub counties with Koch Goma leading.
