Nwoya district has finally secured 50 acres of land for the establishment of petroleum institute.
The land, formerly a community a grazing land is a donation from the people of Atwomo village in Patira Parish, Purongo Sub County.
In October 2014, the ministry of education and sports approved the construction of the institute in Nwoya following complaints from the district leaders that it’s local are not benefiting from the oil industry. Oil deposits were discovered in Nwoya.
However, the acquisition of the land was delayed following a condition from the ministry that the land should free from any sort of encumbrances.
Nwoya district chairman Patrick Okello Oryema hailed the community of Patira for the donation which he said has eased the work of the district officials adding that it will bring in development.
“This is a golden chance for Nwoya community in getting skills needed in the oil industry,’’ he said. The chairman asked the locals to embrace the project so that the institute is develop and starts operation as soon as possible.
According to a letter dated 29th, April 2016 signed by Dr. Rose Nassali Lukwago, the Permanent Secretary ministry of sports and education, a total of US$ Dollars 153.89million has been secured from the bank to support the Albertine region in putting in pace sustainable development projects under which the petroleum institute falls.
Under the same project, the government of Uganda will provide bursaries to at least 600 students from the Albertine community.
