Police in Aswa region on Sunday recovered two of its missing guns in a swamp in Amuru district.
The guns were stolen late last month from Elegu Police Post, at the Uganda- South Sudan border.
The AK47 rifles each with 30 rounds of live ammunition were stolen on the night of April 25, this year from the house of a police officer who had gone for a night out.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa Region Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) said on Monday that the guns are suspected to have been stolen and hidden in the swamp by a gang.
The guns were recovered on Sunday after one of the suspects in the theft of the guns led police to a swamp along Amuru- Adjumani road.
Okema said the guns are suspected to have been stolen from the house of a police man identified as Mike Otong.
Otong had been given the given one of the guns for safe custody by Reagan Orukoma, a colleague.
Okema explained that on the fateful night, Otong was invited by another officer identified only as Bukenya to a local bar for a night out.
But on return, according to Okema, the guns were missing after the house of Otong was broken into.
Four police officers were arrested in connection with the disappearance of the guns.
In addition, four other suspects, said to be members of the same gang have also been arrested, one of them is detained in South Sudan on request of the Ugandan police.
The suspects have been identified as Rashid, Wilfred Omoya alias James Onek, Jackson Okwonga alias Steel, Jackie Apio and another identified as Omoya.
One of the four suspects, Okwonga, had just been released by high court in Gulu after the prosecution failed to prove a case of aggravated robbery against him in March this year.
Police believes another suspect identified as Olweny, who is alleged to have been terrorizing residents of Gulu, Pader and Kitgum since last year is still on the run.
