One of the three men arrested for killing two elephants that had strayed off from Kidepo National Park has been convicted by a court in Agago district.
Martin Ojok on Friday last week pleaded guilty to being in possession of elephant tusks before the magistrate’s court in Patongo town council.
Ojok was fined 800,000 shillings or 8 months in prison by the magistrate.
The two other suspects, Frank Okello and Paul Otoo pleaded not guilty to the charge and were remanded for to prison awaiting trial.
Police in Agago arrested the trio last week from Kaket parish in Lapono Sub County, during an operation to arrest suspected who had last month killed the two elephants from Kidepo National Park.
Communities around the park say the animals destroy their crops yet under the wildlife act, park authorities say, there’s no provision for compensation for damages done by animals in communities that neighbour the parks.
