Atleast 10 people were on Tuesday afternoon admitted in Gulu Regional Referral Hospital in critical condition after allegedly eating poisoned pancakes. Among them are seven women and three children.
The hospitalised are all residents of Ngom Rom village, Pakwelo parish in Unyama Sub County, Gulu district.
Justine Torach, the area LC III Chairperson said the pancakes were made by one Kevin Akello, 23, who is also among the hospitalised.
According to Torach, Akello gave some of the pastry to members of her family who later complained of stomach ache. The pancakes were also eaten by some of her neighbours.
Trouble started at around 3am on Tuesday morning when those who had eaten the pancakes started losing consciousness. An ambulance was called to ferry them to Gulu Referral Hospital for medical attention.
Robin Ojok, 17, an eye witness said the pancakes were made out of cassava flour which was mixed with a white powdery substance bought from a local shop.
The Officer in-Charge of Crime at Gulu Central Police, James Asubu confirmed the incident and said police is already investigating the incident.
Asubu added that police will take a sample of both the pastry and the leftover of the powder to the government analytical laboratory in Kampala for analysis.
