Two South Sudanese nationals have been arrested and charged with illegal possession of illegal fire arms after they were found trying to sell a weapon at Elegu boarder post in Amuru district.
Mr Joshua Opira, 18, was arrested on July 24, 2015 at Elegu town with an AK 47 weapon and 23 rounds of live ammunitions trying to negotiate the price of the weapon in attempt to sell it.
Police say Opira sneaked into Uganda with the gun loaded with rounds of ammunition last week through the porous borders.
Preliminary intelligence reports indicates that the assault rifle with serial No. 19655MK5917SSPS was stolen from South Sudanese Police Headquarters before it found its way into Uganda.
According to Police, two other suspects identified as James Oyet and Issa Opio was also arrested in connection with the case.
Police say Oyet tried to find a market for the gun before police intelligence picked him up following a tipoff leading to the arrest of the trio.
Meanwhile, another South Sudanese national identified as Emmanuel Wani, 20, was also picked up after he was found with 17 rounds of ammunitions.
Wani, a refugee who lives in Kiryandongo district was arrested together with his girlfriend identified as Haniffer Adongpiny, 20, on the July 23, 2015 at Elegu border town.
Police believes that the duo was planning to sell the bullets.
Ponsiano Okello, the Senior State Attorney Amuru says they have preferred charges of unlawful possession of Ammunitions which is Contrary to Section 3 sub section 2(a) Penal Code Act.
Police has linked the current wave of murders being witnessed across the country to illegal weapons that have been trafficked into Uganda through porous borderlines from troubled South Sudan.
