Mr Colbert Opiyo, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) registrar for Pece division in Gulu municipality was on Monday arrested and detained at Gulu central police station for allegedly conning over Shs2 million from people he was promising to give jobs.
He is said to have illegal held interviews with many female applicants who were paying different amounts of money for the promised jobs.
Gulu NRM administrative secretary, Mr Komakech Simon said that after hearing the news that Mr Opiyo was extorting money from people, he decided to call him to his office and had him arrested by police.
Mr Komakech said the act was tarnishing the reputation of the office yet Mr Opiyo was tasked with the work of getting many moralizers in villages but unfortunately he abused it.
“He was to mobilize young people to work for the party in 2016 but he abused it,” Komakech said
Mr Avola George, the District NRM registrar said that the actions of Mr Opiyo are criminal and that he has withdrawn the NRM registration book from him.
Mr Avola said, “He will carry his cross but all that he was doing was before even he was confirmed as the registrar.”
By press time, 7 people who claim to have been conned had already written their statements at Gulu central Police station.
