At least 25 students were arrested after Gulu University administration broke a racket of individuals who have been duplicating examination and registration cards for the institution.
A police source who spoke on condition of anonymity says 15 students were arrested and transferred to Gulu Central Police station for interrogation.
The prime suspect in the scam has been identified as Mr Isaac Eseru, a former student at Gulu University.
Mr Eseru was arrested after he was found inside the main campus taking photos of some of his unidentified clients.
Others suspects include two girls; all students pursuing Bachelors of Public Administration.
Of the arrested students, one whose identity was neither revealed nor the course he is pursuing was owing the government university up to Sh4.1 million.
Mr Muhammad Khalid, the University assistant Public Relations Officer (PRO) confirmed the arrests and said they became suspicious after scrutinizing some of the stamps and signatures in the exams cards.
He noted that this led to arrest of 15 more students on Tuesday and another 12 on Wednesday.
The University publicist adds that some have been counterfeiting the exams cards after clearing for only the first year.
According to Mr Khalid, “Some of the students confessed and admitted that they forged the documents. These documents cost the university around Shs21 million.”
He revealed that the majority affected students are from faculty of business and development studies and suggested that those who owe the university may have to pay the outstanding bills but that it will depend on the resolution of the university council and the senate.
By press time, the university accounts’ department was still summing up lists of those defaulted as well as how much the institution has lost in forged receipts.
The rules and regulations of the university indicate that anyone involved in forgery of the university document will face discontinuation upon discovery.
